And, now onto a book review, starring a princess!

Portland_childrens_Books_princess_hyacinth

Princess Hyacinth by Florence Parry Heide, illus. by Lane Smith

Princess Hyacinth has a problem…she floats!  When dressed in anything less than her heavy crown and weighted robes she goes up, up, up and away!  To keep her safe she stays inside, under a seatbelt, or outside in her heavy garb.  It’s no fun for a princess.  She can’t even go for a walk, it’s more of a drag.  But wait, is there a way Hyacinth can enjoy the outdoors just like the other children?  Silly fun and cheery illustrations!  Recommended for children ages 4+.

Have a royally charming day!

It’s still National Library Week, and we’ve still got books on the brain.  So, here’s a few old and new favorites,  in no particular order.

Portland_kids_Books_beezus_and_ramona

Beezus and Ramona by Beverly Cleary, Ages 6+

Hometown favorite Beverly Cleary wrote over 30+ early reader chapter books depicting the childhood adventures of Ramona, Henry Huggins, Ralph S. Mouse and many others.  Your children will be instantly absorbed in Cleary’s world of imagination, innocent misadventure, and the sweetness of childhood.

Portland_kids_Books_beezus_and_ramona

Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers, Ages 4+

Oliver Jeffers is the current “it” children’s author and illustrator, and Lost and Found is our Megan’s favorite of his stories.  In this quirky tale of friendship and adventure, Jeffers teaches even the youngest readers that “if you love something, set it free.”

Childrens_books_in_Portland_the_little_prince

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, Ages 11+

This classic French story is a perennial favorite for everyone from pre-teens to recent grads to adults and senior citizens.  The messages of imagination, friendship and home are as fresh today as when they were when originally written in 1943.

What are your favorite stories?

Have a weekend full of magical happenings!

Childrens_books_Portland_i_lost_my_tooth_in_africa

I Lost My Tooth in Africa by Penda Diakite, illus. by Baba Wague Diakite

This story was originally written by an 8 year old girl from Portland, OR!  The story  is based on her trip to Africa when her little sister actually lost her tooth in Africa!

Amina was excited to discover she had a loose tooth on the flight from Portland, OR to Bamako, Mali. During the flight her father tells her that if you lose a tooth in Africa and put it under a gourd, you will get a chicken from the African tooth fairy!  Richly and colorfully illustrated by the author’s father and acclaimed author/illustrator, Baba Wague Diakite, this story tells about the infamous African tooth fairy, but also the culture, experience and memories of staying with family in Mali.

Diakite says, “This has been a great reward for me to illustrate my daughter’s book.  Storytelling is a gift to me from my elders and I simply wanted to pass this gift along to my children.”

Esio Trot by Roald Dahl, Ages *+

A very cute short story about a lonely man who woos his downstairs neighbor by “helping her tortoise grow.” Alfie is Mrs. Silver’s beloved pet tortoise, but she is frustrated that in all the years she has cared for him, he has only gained 3 ounces in weight. She is concerned that being on the titchy small side will harm Alfie’s confidence. Mr. Hoppy comes up with a brilliant master plan to make Alfie magically grow to impress Mrs. Silver, but will it work?  Fun for ages 8+
