Hello!

Did you know this week is Screen Free Week?  From April 30 – May 6 families, children and communities across the US pledge to turn off screen media, unplug and start living in a new way.  Without screens in front of our faces there’s lots of time for play, reading, daydreaming, writing, drawing and more.  Over the next 5 days we’ll be sharing a new “screen free” entertainment every morning!

And, to cap off Screen Free Week, we’re having an “April Showers Bring May Flowers” event this Saturday from 10am-12pm!!!  Decorate a Pot, Plant a Flower and Take it Home!  Limited to the first 100 customers.  All Ages!  Free!

Hello!

Today we have our last “Show the Earth Some Love” Tip.  It really stresses that even the smallest steps on your part can make a huge difference.

Show the Earth Some Love Tip #4

Pick 5!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is urging everyone to pick five, simple eco-conscious actions to start using in their daily lives.  A full list can be found at epa.gov/Pick5  When you pick your 5, write them in the comments below!  We’d love to hear about them!

Some of the ideas are tips we already talked about, like Plant a Tree and Eat Local Food (and cut down on pollution from goods transportation).

Here’s some other kid (and adult) friendly ideas:

- Take human powered transportation – walk, skip, hop or jump!

- Learn about composting and try it out!

- Don’t Litter!

- Do some recycled art projects!

Whatever you decide to do, remember that even the smallest steps on your part will help to “show the earth some love.”

Hey there!

Everyone at Child’s Play loves food!  Talking about it, cooking it, baking it, checking out the newest play food sets, we get excited about all of it!  And, we get especially excited when it’s local food!

Show the Earth Some Love Tip #3

Eat Local!

One of the easiest ways to eat locally is to buy groceries at a local farmer’s market.  Lucky for us, Portland is full of farmer’s markets and most of them are just starting up for the year!  For a list of Portland-area farmer’s markets, visit www.portlandfarmersmarket.org

And, once you get your local tasty bits home use one of our Curious Chef kits to help your little one create something delicious!  Curious Chef kits include real kitchen tools sized and made safe for little guys ages 5 and up.

Howdy!

Are you an animal lover?  Well, today’s Show the Earth Some Love Tip is perfect for you!

Show the Earth Some Love Tip #2

Adopt an Animal

Throughout Portland there are several places to adopt an actual, physical pet, but if a pet doesn’t fit your life here is a really great symbolic gesture.

Portland_Toys_World_Wildlife_Fund_Pets

World Wildlife Fund Adoption Kit

Both the World Wildlife Fund and the Audubon Nature Institute have “symbolic adoptions” on their websites.  Visit the site, pick a species and help support global efforts to protect wild animals and their habitats.  Both sites provide an Adoption Kit, as well.

If you are in the market for a new pet for your home, check out the Oregon Humane Society’s website here.  They have great pet profiles to preview before you visit the animals.

And, if you just need someone to cuddle, stop in to pick up a Wild Republic brand stuffed animal.  Wild Republic works closely with several worldwide organizations that protect abandoned animals.  Proceeds from the sale of Wild Republic brand toys supports these efforts.
